Untitled Art Fair 2015For its first participation to UNTITLED ART fair 2015 in Miami Beach, Paris London Hong Kong is pleased to present new paintings by Brooklyn-based artists Andy Cahill and James Hyde. Though the two artists have different sets of conceptual concerns the works shown emphasize a playful materiality. In his paintings, Andy Cahill uses both the front and the back of the canvas. A cartoon image is drawn on the front and acrylic paint is forced through the pores of the linen, creating a skin of plastic paint which projects off the surface like horizontal stalactites. The grid of the fabric is inscribed into the paint itself, reminiscent of both the halftone dots of old Sunday comics and the segmented planes of computer generated models. The images are grotesque, cartoon portraits. These works are a field onto which a viewer can project as much or as little physiological trauma as they want. Andy Cahill (born 1985) lives and works in Brooklyn. He received a BFA in 2008 from the Rhode Island School of Design in film, animation and video and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Film, Video, New Media and Animation in 2010. Selected exhibitions include Poor Richard Scumbag at Paris London Hong Kong; Chicago, The Barn Show at Johannes Vogt Gallery; East Hampton, New York, MOVES THINKS REPEATS PAUSES at Tony Wight Gallery; Chicago, and High Density, Oblique Function, at Proxy; Providence. Cahill was a resident of The Lighthouse Works Residency on Fishers Island, NY (2015) and a recipient of the School of the Art Institute Merit Scholarship (2009). James Hyde’s work ranges from paintings on photographic prints to large-scale installations, photography, and abstract furniture design. The works shown at UNTITLED play many roles, they are simultaneously designed objects, decoration, collages, and paintings. His works addresses considerations about the domestic scale and landscape. The paintings become ‘wall decoration’ and have a function that is of the same importance as a table, a chair and other domestic objects. James Hyde (born 1958) lives and works in Brooklyn. He has lectured as a visiting professor at a number of institutions, including Yale University, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Bard College, and Cooper Union. He is represented by Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire (Paris), Schau Ort / Christiane Büntgen (Zurich) and David Risley Gallery (Copenhagen). His work has been exhibited at the Maison de la Culture de Bourges and the Centre d’Art Contemporain d’Ivry, Galerie Fernand Leger/Credac in France, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Brent Sikkema Gallery and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, and the Zwemmer Gallery in London. In 2014 and 2015 , Hyde presented over 40 works as part of a retrospective organized by the C.Ar.D. festival in Northern Italy. He has been honored with a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship His work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum of Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Denver Art Museum, and the Museo Cantonale d’Arte in Lugano, Switzerland. | James Hyde, Climb, 2015, Acrylic dispersion on archival inkjet print on stretched linen, 43 x 68 in | James Hyde, Latch, 2015, Acrylic dispersion on archival inkjet print on board, 23 x 27 in | James Hyde, Ceiling, Acrylic dispersion on archival inkjet print on stretched linen,16 x 23 in | James Hyde, Corner, 2015, Acrylic dispersion on archival inkjet print on board, 16 x 23 | Andy Cahill, Scissoring, 2015, Acrylic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Math and Luck, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Blue Balls, 2015, Acrylic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Breathless and Trespassing, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Masthead, 2015, Acrylic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Withering, Sinning and Sullen, 2015, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Cold Open, 2015, Acrylic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Fresh Felt, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, You Won't Like It, 2015, Acrylic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Treat or Trash Your Lungs, 2015, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Mr. Touch-and-go Bullet-head, 2015, Acryllic, graphite and crayon on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in | Andy Cahill, Stuck in the Middle, 2015, Acrylic on bleached linen, 24 x 24 in |
