Boyang HouT.V. Buddha Boyang Hou’s work examines liminal transition and meditative iteration. The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing series that breaks down the practice of painting into its component parts and fetishizes each one. Hou prepares his canvases with pigmented gessos, executes systematic graphite drawings and finishes with three colors of enamel that represent a mid-tone, a highlight and a lowlight. Hou works within this prescribed system and finds a meditative satisfaction in the continuity. As an avid collector of consumer objects, Hou has an obsessive interest in the history, presentation and material specificity of all things collectable. His approach to painting is influenced by this interest in both subject and method. Boyang Hou comes from the East Coast and currently lives in Chicago. He received his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from New York University. This is Bo’s first solo show in Chicago.
